ABOUT National Flat Track
Flat Track Motorcycle Racing can trace it’s roots back to the early 1900’s and the early board track racers and competition between the earliest motorcycles. It is America’s original extreme sport.
in the 1920’s and 1930’s the war between Harley-Davidson and indian created a fervor. The “Hogs” and the “Wrecking Crew” each had their own look, style, and cadre of fans. But, it was the sixties and seventies when the sport hit new heights with superstars named Mert, Dick, Gary, and later “King” Kenny.
A 1971 movie called “On Any Sunday” featured Hollywood icon Steve McQueen talking about his true passion...motorcycle racing. It also followed 1969 Flat Track Grand National Champion Mert Lawwill on the circuit in his quest to defend the championship. This exposure made motorcycling and flat track racing the ultimate in cool building legions of fans and followers.
Over the last five decades, Flat Track Racing has seen surges and declines, while creating superstars and offering weekend fun for the nameless weekly warriors. However, the past few years have seen a resurgence in rider participation, fan following, and overall awareness for the sport. This has been driven by lower participation costs compared to other forms of racing. The relatability of the sport, along with ease of engagement with fans and marketing partners has flat track racing poised for a significant growth surge.
